Extra Curricula Programs at KPS 2025
Welcome
Welcome back to Term 2! I hope all our Kensington families enjoyed a relaxing and refreshing break. It’s always wonderful to take some time to slow down, connect with loved ones, and recharge for the busy term ahead. We’re excited to see our students back, ready to learn, play, and continue growing in every aspect of their school life.
As we settle back into our routines, now is a great time to talk with your children about how they engage in the rich variety of extra-curricular activities available at Kensington Public School. We’re proud to offer opportunities that go beyond the classroom—do your children join in the games in the library at lunchtime? Are they helping with our environmental group in the garden, or maybe singing in one of our choirs or learning to knit, to name just a few?
We also partner with a number of excellent providers who offer engaging programs before, during and after school. These include chess before school, dance at recess, guitar lessons, language classes, and exciting art and cartooning workshops. Students in Years 3–6 can also explore their creative side through our drama program and join our school band. You’ll find all the information about these offerings in our weekly newsletter—so be sure to have a look and see what’s possible!
We strongly believe in developing the whole child, and these activities provide valuable experiences that build confidence, curiosity, and resilience. Whether they’re performing on stage, solving a chess puzzle, or planting seedlings in the garden, our students are building important life skills that enrich their learning and personal growth. We look forward to seeing many of our students trying something new this term!
Warm regards,
Ms Louise Stone
Principal
Thank you

Student Wellbeing @ KPS
Please find Term Two’s Focus of the Fortnight copied below:
Students demonstrate our school values of Honour, Knowledge and Community by making positive choices. To support our understanding and help us to make positive choices, each rotation we focus on a different aspect of SEL (Social and Emotional Learning).

Supporting student wellbeing through staff professional development:
High Potential and Gifted Education
This term, our fantastic KPS staff attended some important staff development days. On day one, staff participated in professional learning focused on High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE). NSW Department of Education staff across the state participated in this training. We were able to tailor the professional learning to the needs of our school community to support our continued focus on improving the educational outcomes, opportunities and wellbeing for our students. We focused on how to identify students who may be HPG students in the following domains: Physical, Social and Emotional, Creative and Academic. Staff were also able to share their knowledge demonstrating useful teaching strategies and adjustments to support and extend student learning.
Emotion Coaching
On day two, our staff were able to attend professional learning delivered by the ‘Getting on Track in Time - Got It!’ team. This team support the delivery of a specialist early intervention mental health program for children in Kindergarten to Year 2, and their parents and carers. The school-based program helps parents and schools identify children’s social and emotional difficulties and supports them to respond to difficult behaviours.
Got It! is delivered by NSW Health teams in partnership with NSW Department of Education public schools, across two school terms and is designed to reduce the incidence of early behavioural, social and emotional concerns and ultimately the emergence of conduct disorder in young children.
Our staff participated in this professional learning and were able to learn how ‘Emotion Coaching’ and the ‘Getting on Track in Time – Got It!’ program will be able to complement our Zones of Regulation resources and further support our students, parents, carers and community.
This year, our school and community will be lucky enough to benefit from this program with further information to follow.
Warmest regards,
The Student Wellbeing Team
Selective High School & Opportunity Classes 2026
Please see attached information from the department regarding a guide to selective high school and opportunity classes for 2026.
Celebration Hat Parade
On Thursday 10th April KPS held our annual Celebration parade and raffle. Congratulations to all our students who created fantastic hats that honoured the many celebrations we participate in at this time. Students proudly wore their wonderful hats and paraded around the COLA to smiles and cheers from their peers, teachers and carers.
Special thanks to our community who generously donated a mountain of items and then created the amazing raffle prizes for each class. Your generosity and continued support successfully raised $2565.05 for the Sydney Children’s Hospital. Congratulations to all our raffle winners who were overjoyed with their prizes.

Foster Care
NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) is the lead government agency responsible for children who are placed in out-of-home care (OOHC). There is a shortage of homes for children in out-of-home care with an urgent need for foster carers. Please see the photo below.

Ethics Teachers Needed 2025
We currently cannot meet the demand for ethics classes at KPS and so there are many students on waiting lists. Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends, and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you will get a lot out of it too!
If you have an hour a week and want to ensure children at our school can access this valuable program, go to: https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/
Or contact the KPS Ethics Coordinator, John-Daniel Encel jd.encel@unsw.edu.au
Celebrating and Highlighting Our Community
Please email the school with details of any accomplishments that our wonderful community has achieved, and we will publish it in our next newsletter. Don’t forget to include a photo!
Ella in Year 5 and Hannah V in Year 3 competed in The Matildas Cup for Academy 11 soccer club, which was part of The Girls Football Project. Ella’s team won their grand-final 2-0 and Hannah’s team won their grand-final 13-2. Well done.
