Student Extra Curricula Programs at KPS 2025
Welcome
Welcome back to school after the winter break! We hope you had a wonderful time with family and friends. As we begin the new term, we have some exciting updates and activities to share with you.
Our Stage Three students have had an incredible time on their Bathurst excursion, and the Year Four students are counting down the days until their sport camp adventures in Week Four at Collaroy. We encourage you to follow all our school activities on our Instagram page @kensington.ps to see what the children have been up to.
We’re looking forward to welcoming families into school next week as part of our Education Week celebrations! On Monday morning, start your day by enjoying our vibrant street gallery along Doncaster Avenue and warming up with a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate for purchase from the coffee van before school. Be sure to visit our Environmental Stall, where students will be selling a range of goodies. Our Education Week festivities will officially begin with a Smoking Ceremony which is an important and meaningful way to open the week. We hope to see many of you joining in the activities and celebrating learning across our school community. Please see a Schoolzine notification due out before the end of this week with further information regarding Multicultural Day next Tuesday. Don't forget to check out the Education Week Program to see when your children are performing.
Just a quick reminder: School attendance is vital for students' wellbeing, sense of belonging, and educational readiness. When children are not here on time, they enter the classroom unsettled and unprepared, missing vital morning instructions and the explicit lessons like the phonics program for our youngest students. Please don't forget to report reasons for school absences so that we can ensure accurate records are kept.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to a fantastic term ahead.
Ms Louise Stone
Principal

Focus of the Fortnight
Please find the topics for Term Three’s Focus of the Fortnight copied below:
Students demonstrate our school values of Honour, Knowledge and Community by making positive choices. To support our understanding and help us to make positive choices, each rotation we focus on a different aspect of SEL (Social and Emotional Learning).

Getting On Track In Time – Got It!
It was great to meet Freya and Nicole from the fantastic ‘Got It!’ team on Monday morning. A huge thank you to the team and to our wonderful parents and carers from our community who gave up their time to learn about how we can work together to provide early support for our youngest learners’ wellbeing.
For those of you who are interested but were not able to attend the session, please find a summary of the information shared about the program copied below and reach out to Mrs Jen Stubbles and/or your child’s classroom teacher to find out more.
What is Got It!?
Beginning in Kindergarten through Year 2, Got It! is an early‑intervention, school‑based mental health program delivered through a partnership between NSW Health and the NSW Department of Education. Public primary schools across NSW, including in Northern Sydney, Illawarra‑Shoalhaven and the Mid North Coast, participate in this initiative.
- A two‑term whole‑school program that equips teachers and parents with practical Emotion Coaching strategies to help children manage emotions and behaviour in both classroom and home settings
- A targeted early‑intervention for children in K–2 who may benefit from emotional, behavioural and peer‑relationship support.. Those identified can attend a 10‑week small group program at school with a parent/carer present each week, led by NSW Health Child & Adolescent Mental Health clinicians
Why it matters
- Got It! helps “catch” emerging concerns when intervention is most effective, in the early years, reducing risk of serious mental health issues later in life.
- Stronger emotional and social wellbeing: Children learn emotional regulation, improved peer interactions and positive coping strategies—helping them thrive at school and at home
- Empowered parents and educators: Through workshops and shared languge on emotion coaching, parents and teachers gain skills to consistently support children’s emotional development, making a positive difference across environments
- Whole‑school culture of wellbeing: Professional development across all staff creates a more emotionally aware school community committed to early prevention and support
Home–school partnership
Families are invited to be active participants:
- Parent seminars and workshops introduce the same strategies used with classroom staff
- Participation in the small group sessions enables parents to learn alongside their children and reinforce emotional skills at home
- School staff and clinical teams work closely with families to build tailored support around each child’s needs
- Even if your child isn’t selected, all parents can benefit from the universal workshops offered to the school community.
Expression of interest forms:
A small group of interested families from Kindergarten to Year 2 will be able to join a free group program running on Friday mornings from 9 – 11 in Term 4, 2025 at Kensington Public School. The group requires one parent and one child to attend.
Please register your interest by completing the Expression of Interest form linked below:
Please send the forms back through email or hand them in at the school office, marked for the attention of Mrs Jen Stubbles
We are very excited to be able to offer this program to support our students and look forward to speaking with those interested in participating.
Kind regards,
Mrs Jen Stubbles (K-2 Student Wellbeing Coordinator)
Understanding the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)
Each year, all Australian schools take part in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). This important initiative helps schools, education departments, and the Australian Government better understand the needs of students with disability and ensure that appropriate support is provided.
What is the NCCD?
The NCCD is a process where schools identify and record students receiving adjustments and support to help them access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers. Adjustments may include things like modified learning programs, extra time for tasks, assistive technology, or tailored teaching strategies.
Why is it important?
The information collected through the NCCD:
- Helps schools plan and improve their support for students with disability.
- Informs funding and resourcing decisions at a national and state level.
- Ensures that schools continue to meet their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005.
How is information collected?
Teachers gather evidence of the adjustments provided for students over at least a 10-week period. The data does not include students’ names or personal details. All information is de-identified before being submitted. This means that no individual student can be identified from the data provided to the government.
What does this mean for parents and carers?
If your child is receiving adjustments, your school will already be working in partnership with you to plan and review these supports. The NCCD simply provides a way for schools to record and report on the types of support being provided. There is no additional action required by parents or carers.
More information
If you would like to know more about the NCCD and how it works, you can visit the official website: https://www.nccd.edu.au or speak with your child’s teacher or Mrs Jane Tovey and Mrs Jen Stubbles (Learning and Support team)
Please also see the information flyer (attached) for further information.

NAIDOC Day Celebrations
As a part of our NAIDOC Day celebrations during Education Week, Kensington Public School is participating in the 2025 Great Book Swap, a fundraising activity that supports the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and their work with remote Communities across Australia.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a charity that works with 495 remote communities to supply books and literacy resources, and publish books in First Languages by and for First Nations Peoples.
As part of our Great Book Swap program, The Literacy Foundation provide all participating schools with access to digital learning resources.
As a host of the event, our school has been assigned to the Marntuwunyini House language house representing the Tiwi Islands. Students will have access to items such as language fact sheets, videos and maps for cultural learning.
As a part of our NAIDOC celebrations, we ask that they bring a book (to be donated) and a gold coin to school on Monday August 4 as this is the nominated day for this event.
Our fundraising site is:
if you would like to make an online donation to Great Book Swap in the lead up to the event.
Walkathon
We are very excited to hold our annual KPS K-6 Walkathon at Kensington Oval. This year the Walkathon will be in Week 8 on Friday 12 September, with a backup date in Week 9 on Friday 19 September if the weather is bad. The Walkathon is a wonderful opportunity for K-6 to participate in a fundraising activity that promotes fitness and healthy habits. More information will come in the next few newsletters. This year, we are looking to raise funds to update and purchase new technology equipment and resources for the new curriculums to be used across K-6.
ROUND 4 Premier’s Debating Challenge
The last preliminary round debate was held in Week 10, and the Kensington Public School Debaters did an excellent job of debating each other. With student absences and some terrible weather, both teams worked hard to debate the topic “That primary schools should have compulsory swimming lessons”. Our Year 6 team debated the Affirmative side presenting some strong social and safety arguments. These arguments were enough to convince the adjudicator that they presented the stronger case, and he confirmed the Year 6 Affirmative team as the winners. Congratulations to all our debaters who have debated all term with honour and grace. Your coaches could not be more proud.
100 Days of Kindergarten!
During our first week back, Kindergarten students celebrated 100 days of school. They enjoyed a special morning with their families celebrating their big achievement. There were many students who dressed up as 100 year olds, cupcakes with 100's and 1000's, collections of 100 and more! Well done, Kindergarten! We can't wait to watch you continue to grow over the next 100 days.

Celebrating and Highlighting Our Community
Please email the school with details of any accomplishments that our wonderful community has achieved, and we will publish it in our next newsletter. Don’t forget to include a photo!
Sophie in Year 6 and Eline in Year 4 represented Sydney East at the Kim Small Shield (under-12 state hockey championship) in Tamworth. After winning the B Division championship last year, Sophie and her girls-1 team were promoted to the A Division this year. They finished 6th out of 10 teams. Eline made her first appearance on the u12 girls-2 team, playing in the B Division. She and her team performed very well, finishing 3rd out of 21 teams. More news came at the end of the tournament when Sophie was named "Player of the Tournament" out of 31 participating girls’ teams.

Ella in Year 5 competed in a soccer tournament called Kanga Cup in Canberra during the school holidays. Her team won all 5 pool matches and advanced top of the table to the semi-finals which they unfortunately lost. Ella scored their only goal in the semi-final. Well done, Ella.
