Extra Curricula Programs at KPS 2025
Welcome
It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week Four, and so much great learning is happening across the school. This term we continue our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of all our students, and I’d like to share some of the important work we’ve been doing in the area of High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE).
During our recent Staff Development Days, our teaching staff dedicated over five hours to deepening our understanding of the learning continuum and how to further support all students—those who need support, those achieving expected outcomes, and those working beyond them. We focused on how we can refine our teaching practices to ensure every student is being challenged at their level. A key part of this work is differentiation. Differentiated teaching means adjusting the content, process, or product of learning tasks to suit each student’s readiness, interest, and learning profile.
At Kensington Public School, we strive to provide a variety of programs that respond to students’ individual strengths and talents. From hands-on maths lessons in the playground to small group challenges like the Maths Olympiad, our students are encouraged to think deeply and apply their learning in creative ways. These opportunities help students to stretch themselves and explore learning beyond the standard curriculum.
One of the most exciting examples of HPGE in action is through our filmmaking program. When students create their own short films, they bring together a wide range of skills—from understanding light and sound (Science), to designing costumes (Creative Arts), to writing scripts (English). These integrated projects allow students to engage in high-level thinking while pursuing their passions. We are proud of the ways our staff continue to innovate, and we thank our families for supporting this important work.
If you have any other questions about how we are meeting your child’s needs, please email the school and our teachers will be in touch.
Warm regards,
Ms Louise Stone
Principal

What is cyberbullying?
https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/issues-and-advice/cyberbullying
Please look at the following excerpt from the esafety toolkit (website link above) to support families and carers navigate online safety for their children
Cyberbullying is when someone is mean to a child or young person under 18 online so they feel bad or upset. It can happen on a social media site, game, app, or any other online or electronic service or platform. It can include: posts, comments, texts, messages, chats, livestreams, memes, images, videos and emails.
These are some examples of ways the internet can be used to make someone feel bad or upset:
- Sending hurtful messages about them or to them.
- Sharing embarrassing photos or videos of them, including sexual content.
- Recording and sharing physical abuse, violence or harassment.
- Spreading nasty online gossip about them.
- Leaving them out online.
- Creating fake accounts in their name.
- Tricking them into believing you are someone else.
For most children and young people, online life is a key part of their identity and how they communicate, so cyberbullying can be very harmful. It can cause a range of emotions including fear, anxiety, anger and despair. They may suffer trauma and ongoing depression.
If the child or young person is in immediate danger, it’s important to get help fast. For criminal activity such as physical violence or stalking, it’s best to report it to the police.
Cyberbullying and other negative behaviour can also be reported to the service or platform that was used to send, post or share it.
If the behaviour goes against the platform guidelines they will review and may take action including removing the post. Most online platforms don't let users know the results of their report.
Ask your child if they need support to check if the post is no longer there.
A parent or guardian can report serious cyberbullying to eSafety even without the consent of their child, if they are able to collect the evidence required.
Understanding Self-Management: A Key Component of the CASEL Approach

In our ongoing commitment to promote social and emotional learning (SEL) at Kensington Public School, we are focusing on one of the five core competencies outlined in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework: self-management. This essential skill plays a crucial role in helping students navigate their emotions, behaviours, and interactions both in and out of the classroom.
What is Self-Management?
Self-management refers to the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in different situations. It involves managing stress, controlling impulses, setting personal goals, and being able to take responsibility for one’s actions. This competency empowers students to make thoughtful choices, stay focused on their tasks, and respond to challenges in a constructive manner.
Throughout Term one, our KPS students have been continuing to develop greater self-awareness linking how they are physically feeling with their emotions and vice versa. Our focus for Term 2 will be looking at positive ways that students can self-manage their emotions and use pro-social behaviour.
Strategies for Developing Self-Management Skills
At Kensington Public School, we are implementing various strategies to help students enhance their self-management skills:
- Mindfulness Practices: Incorporating mindfulness exercises, such as deep breathing, can help students become more aware of their emotions and learn to manage them effectively.
- Goal Setting: Within the classroom setting, students are encouraged to set personal and academic goals. They are taught how to break down larger objectives into manageable steps and monitor their own progress.
- Classroom Routines: Establishing consistent routines helps students develop self-discipline. Teachers provide clear expectations and structured environments to foster a sense of responsibility and accountability.
- Reflection Activities: We encourage students to reflect on their experiences, both successes and challenges, to promotes self-awareness.
Involving Families
We recognise that self-management skills are not just developed at school but are also supported and developed at home. We encourage parents and caregivers to engage in conversations with their children about emotions, goal-setting, and strategies for managing stress. Together, we can create a supportive network that empowers our students to thrive.
Please look at the flyer (copied below) and the opportunities provided by the ‘Got It’ team for families to be involved with supporting children with emotional regulation

From superheroes to pop stars, the creativity and excitement of our students and their families is amazing to see. It was wonderful to celebrate our students' imaginations and personalities while successfully raising funds for our P&C. Thank you to all who took part.

Term 2 Week 3 - Debating - Primary Debating Workshop
On Friday 16th May, KPS Debaters packed their palm cards and headed to Camdenville Public School for a 2025 Primary Debating Workshop. The workshop covered all things students of all levels need to know about primary debating including rebuttal, arguments, definitions and speakers’ roles as well as games and activities designed to help them consolidate the new knowledge gained. Debaters even had a chance to deliver a short rebuttal and argument for an official adjudicator who provided feedback for improvement, and well deserved praise for delivery and effort. Our debaters enjoyed the day and are excited for their first round competition debate in Week 4.
Congratulations debaters and happy arguing!

Ethics Teachers Needed 2025
We currently cannot meet the demand for ethics classes at KPS and so there are many students on waiting lists. Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends, and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you will get a lot out of it too!
If you have an hour a week and want to ensure children at our school can access this valuable program, go to: https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/
Or contact the KPS Ethics Coordinator, John-Daniel Encel jd.encel@unsw.edu.au
Celebrating and Highlighting Our Community
Please email the school with details of any accomplishments that our wonderful community has achieved, and we will publish it in our next newsletter. Don’t forget to include a photo!
Jamal recently participated in the NSW State Basketball Championships, representing the Sydney East team. His team placed 5th overall, which is a fantastic achievement in a highly competitive field. More importantly, Jamal represented Sydney East with distinction, demonstrating outstanding commitment, courage, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament, as well as respect both on and off the court.
Jamal played a huge role in the Sydney East team, playing both centre and small forward, and had a great week. Through his hard work, he has been selected into the NSW State Team and will be competing at Nationals later in the year which will take place in Queensland.
A massive congratulations to Jamal in his achievements.
