Extra Curricula Programs at KPS 2025
Welcome
Welcome to Week 10 Newsletter,
As we reach the end of Term 1, I want to take a moment to congratulate our students, staff, and families on a fantastic start to the school year. It has been a term filled with hard work, dedication, and achievement across all areas—academically, socially, and on the sporting field.
Our students have embraced new challenges in their learning, demonstrated kindness and respect in their friendships, and given their best efforts in various sporting events. I am incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and commitment to school life. A heartfelt thank you also goes to our teachers and staff for their unwavering dedication and to our families for their continued support.
I encourage families to take time over the holidays to chat with their children about the many wonderful opportunities available at KPS. Inside the school, students can participate in choirs, Lego Club, the Garden and Environment Club, and our recorder groups. Beyond the school day, students can get involved in dance, guitar, art classes, chess, and STEM programs. These enriching activities provide students with valuable experiences that support their learning and personal growth. We hope to see many students taking up these opportunities in Term 2!
As we head into the school holidays, I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned break, spending time with family and friends. April also brings several important cultural and religious celebrations, including Ramadan, Easter, Greek Orthodox Easter and Passover. To those in our community celebrating, I wish you joy, peace, and special moments with loved ones.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term 2 on Wednesday, 30 April. Until then, stay safe, enjoy the break, and we’ll see you all soon for another great term ahead!
Warm regards,
Ms Louise Stone
Principal

Focus of the Fortnight, Week 10 and Week 11
Across the school, students are continuing to learn about the Focus of the Fortnight skills and values. Our focus each fortnight is selected to complement the learning taking place in the classroom and through our whole-school activities. Please find the remaining Focus of the Fortnight topics for this term copied below:

It was so lovely to be able to invite all our students to celebrate our first Student of the Term assembly for 2025. Harmony Week Celebration: Monday 17 March - Sunday 23 March
Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated in our Harmony Week activities last week. It was heart-warming to see our wonderful KPS students learning about the ongoing theme of Harmony Week; ‘Everyone Belongs’ and ‘Harmony - we all have a role to play!’. Students participated in lessons relating to the celebration of cultural diversity and a sense of belonging for all Australians.
Some classes were invited to look at some of the following ‘Aussie Facts’ and the latest Census results through the Australian Bureau of Statistics:

A special thank you to all our students who wore orange on Harmony Day to show their support.
Please take a look at some of our students completing their Kindness clouds and some of our Year 6 visual displays. Thanks to KL and 6F classes for your contributions for our newsletter!

Warmest regards,
The Student Wellbeing Team

Cross Country Carnival
On Thursday 27 March we held our Cross Country Carnival at Centennial Park. After a wet start, we all had a fantastic day. The students participated and gave their best efforts in their event on the day. Many thanks also to parents who were able to battle the weather to attend and cheer the students on.

Celebration Hat Parade and Easter Raffle Reminder
Our SRC annual Easter Raffle and Celebration Hat Parade will be held on Thursday 10 April at 9:15am under the COLA. Parents and families are invited to attend the celebrations. All students are encouraged to design and create a hat to represent any holiday celebrated by their families at this time, such as Easter, Holi, Greek Easter, Passover and Ramadan. Please consider the practicality of hats. Hats may be brought in and stored in classrooms from Monday 7 April 2025.
Each year during our Celebration Hat Parade, 4 x Easter Raffle baskets are given away as prizes to each class. We are asking for your generous donations for these baskets. Donations may include Easter Eggs (please no nuts), activity books, stickers, fluffy toys, games and craft kits. All donations should be given to class teachers and can be bought in from next week. Raffle tickets will be sold at school from Monday 24 March through to Wednesday 9 April. Tickets are 50 cents each or 5 for $2. All money raised will be donated to the Sydney Children’s Hospital. If you are available to help, make the raffle prizes (4 baskets in total per class), please let your Class Parent know.

PSSA Trials
At Kensington Public School we foster the inclusion of all team members and the effort of all students. We recognise that winning is a rewarding experience. However, being in a collective group with a common goal where each member feels included supersedes the goal of winning. There are many community opportunities outside of school that are more competitive.
PSSA Team Selection Process
We have junior and senior teams in PSSA competitions. The junior teams are our 2025 Year 3 and 4 students, and the senior teams are our 2025 Year 5 and 6 students. Student selection is based on the following skill attributes demonstrated on the day of the trial:
Winter Sport
AFL: Passing, Kicking, Catching
Netball: Shooting, Passing, Catching
Soccer: Trapping, Dribbling and Passing
The process includes teachers viewing the candidates with the skill-based selection required for the key player attributes. The teachers convene to aggregate grading and opinions about player selection and a final decision is made about team formation. Teachers can only comment on what the student can demonstrate on the trial day.
A reminder about Training and Mandatory Equipment
A Schoolzine notification will be sent if training or PSSA sport is cancelled. Please ensure you register for “PSSA” on Schoolzine so you don’t miss messages.
Information for equipment needed and training days will be sent at a later date.
Students will be informed of team selection at a later date.
Please feel free to contact the school on kensington-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au if you have further questions.

Ethics Teachers Needed 2025
We currently cannot meet the demand for ethics classes at KPS and so there are many students on waiting lists. Ethics classes can only be offered as an alternative if we have volunteer teachers. Volunteers can come from our parents, grandparents, friends, and local community, from every walk of life. Primary Ethics offers full, free training, lesson scripts and teaching support.
Ethics encourages children to listen closely and to develop their opinions through ethical reasoning. Ethics helps kids develop confidence and empathy. As an ethics teacher, you will get a lot out of it too!
If you have an hour a week and want to ensure children at our school can access this valuable program, go to: https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/
Or contact the KPS Ethics Coordinator, John-Daniel Encel jd.encel@unsw.edu.au
